Frequently Asked Questions

Following are common questions clients ask when coming to the Desert Beauty Day Spa.

What is the best time for scheduling?
A morning or mid-day treatment or massage can help to give your body a stimulating warm up for a physically active or mentally challenging day. An evening or after-dinner treatment or massage will prepare you for an easy evening or restful, relaxed sleep.
What do I do before my massage?
Bathe or take a shower before your treatment or massage to enhance your relaxation as well as cleanse the epidermis (skin) preparing it for the absorption of our creams, lotions and oils.
How to Care for Brazilian Wax
Let your skin heal. After you get your Brazilian wax, it is likely your skin may be slightly irritated and possibly red. For some individuals, the irritation goes away relatively quick. However, for those individuals with sensitive skin, the irritation could last for several days.
Avoid tight clothing.  It’s important that you let your skin breathe after the Brazilian wax. Avoid wearing tight undergarments or underwear. Wear a dress to your waxing session. Wear cotton underwear or no underwear at all underneath. This will let your skin breathe and reduce the possibility of irritation.
Make sure to moisturize. Keeping your bikini area moisturized will reduce irritation and also minimize hair growth. As the hair grows in, it will make the skin a lot softer and reduce chafing. Many individuals like to use baby lotion.  Use a mild exfoliator approximately two full days later. My recommendation is Dermalogica's Exfoliating Body Scrub that gently exfoliates.  In addition, the Exfoliating Body Scrub is more mold-resistant than loofahs.
Don’t take a hot bath for the rest of the day. No tanning beds, saunas or steam rooms for two days after the Brazilian wax.
Keep hands away from touching freshly waxed skin, as this can encourage irritation or small pimples.
Maintain your Brazilian wax.  In order to keep your Brazilian wax in the best condition it’s important to regularly wax.  Many individuals usually return about 4 to 6 weeks after their initial wax.  The more you get waxed, the easier it becomes for you. Many individuals claim it is less painful and there is less hair growth after their first few waxes. Enjoy that Brazilian wax and remember to maintain it!
Desert Beauty takes pride in providing  a clean waxing facility.  Only licensed therapist are permitted to conduct waxing procedures.  We follow strict policies that protect against any contamination of product or instruments. Thank you for choosing us and also for your referrals.

What should I tell the therapist or esthetician?
Before you begin any treatment, inform the therapist or esthetician of any sensitive areas or any changes in your body or skin since your last visit.

 What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup has been around for more than 30 years and is a method of implanting color pigments into your skin to create a lasting cosmetic effect. Makeup can be as soft or dramatic as you like.

How long does permanent cosmetic makeup last?
The treatment is permanent but it will soften with age, sun, skin peels and cleansing lotions. Retouching can be done at any time and one touch-up to ensure perfection and permanency is included in the price.

Is the permanent cosmetic makeup procedure safe?
Yes, the permanent makeup procedure at Desert Beauty Day Spa is applied under strict sterilization rules. We have a  professionally trained aesthetician whom we highly recommend. You can be assured that all materials are properly disposed and never reused.

Does the procedure hurt?
Comfort levels vary from person to person but with our topical numbing creams patients find the treatments very tolerable. Afterwards you will be provided with a take home aftercare ointment.

Can I return to work or go out in public immediately
Yes, you may have some swelling or puffiness and there will be some flaking of the area treated after the first few days. Your eyes will look like you have had a good cry. The intensity of your permanent makeup for the first week or so will be more intense than the final color.

What should I wear?
For most treatments it is best to wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing. While most areas of clothing are covered to protect them from stains it is possible that creams, lotions or oils can come in contact with your clothing.

What about disrobing or nudity?
There is no question that a visit to the spa may involve some nudity (depending on the service) - but modesty is always respected. Body Treatments sometimes requires a little more exposure. You might start out under a towel, then areas to be treated are exposed only during the treatment fo that area. If that makes you uneasy or uncomfortable, talk to the receptionist about the level of exposure involved in any body treatment. Your comfort level is always respected.

What about treatments during pregnancy?
Going to a spa can be a treat for everyone, but we feel you need to heed some precautions if you are pregnant.  The following are some guidelines to help you sort through the maze of information regarding product use during pregnancy:
It is very important to inform the technician or therapist if you are pregnant or if you suspect that you may be pregnant before starting ANY session.
Sunscreen: A must. Melasma, which can afflict pregnant women in the form of brown spots or an overall darkening of the face, is discoloration that may last a lifetime. It can be made worse by the effects of sunlight mixed with the hormones of pregnancy. Look for a sunscreen that contains UVA/UVB protection.
Alpha Hydroxy acids including glycolic peeling agents: Fine.
Self tanning creams/lotions: Fine.
Acne medications: Never Accutane, which is linked to serious birth defects. Some doctors recommend staying away from benzoyl peroxide.
Salicylic acids are fine, as is microdermabrasion.
RetinA? Not a good idea given the toxicity of oral vitamin A.
Saunas, steam rooms and heated body wraps: Definite No-No's.
DBDS will not do massage if the pregnancy is in the first trimester.

What about tipping?
A 17% gratuity is added to the total of all spa packages.
All other services tips of 15-20% are typical at many day spas.  If you really enjoyed and appreciated your service, tips are certainly appreciated however not expected.
